WHO WE ARE

A Church Anchored in Tradition, Alive to the Spirit

At First Presbyterian Church, our faith stands on a foundation older and sturdier than any one of us—rooted in Scripture, shaped by the creeds and confessions of the Church, and nourished by the long, steady current of Reformed theology. We are anchored to the past not out of nostalgia, but because deep roots help us stand when the winds of life bend us low.

On any given Sunday, you’ll feel that anchor. You’ll hear it in liturgy spoken by generations before us, in hymns that have carried saints through joy and sorrow, and in a musical life that lives comfortably in both the classical tradition and the fresh air of mountain-folk and contemporary Christian song. We believe worship should sound like the whole church—past, present, and yet to come.

And yet—because we are Presbyterian, because we are Reformed—we refuse to let our anchoring become our anchor down. Our tradition gives us a compass, but the Holy Spirit gives us wind.

Faith in Motion: Trusting God’s Ongoing Work

In the PC(USA), we say, “Reformed, and always being reformed, according to the Word of God.” That little phrase is not a slogan—it’s our way of life. It means we listen for God’s voice not only in ancient pages but also in the unfolding stories of our neighbors, our city, our world. It means we expect the Spirit to surprise us. It means we trust that God is still creating, still healing, still calling us forward.

Most Sundays, if you lean in closely enough, you can hear the creak of a ship’s mast—this church learning to raise new sails. We’re learning to let the Spirit billow us into God’s future, even when that future asks us to risk, or stretch, or make space for people we’ve never met before.

Creating Space for Christ’s Love

At the heart of it all is this calling we hold together:

to create space where you can find Christ’s love.

Sacred space. Honest space. Brave space.

Space where your story is welcome, your questions are safe, and your burdens don’t have to be carried alone.

We believe that Christ meets us exactly where we are—and never leaves us there.

Anchored to the past, alive to the present, open to the Spirit’s future:

that is who we are.

And by God’s grace, that is who we are becoming.
